Very sweet memories. Many many people in this country love their families and love their memories. My childhood was great because our Italian extended family lived in a town house building in Brooklyn owned by my grandfather who was the glue for all of us allowed us the freedom of open door visits any time we wanted to .
We loved each other all of us. Christmas and Easter were favorites as well as all of our birthdays celebrated altogether along with friends and cousins aunts uncles and it was marvelous.
The problems that existed did not rule our lives. My grandparents just kept going. We grandchildren absolutely loved them and we saw each other every day. They lived on the first floor apartment. My mom and dad and brother on second floor apartment and my aunt Katy (mom’s sister and her husband Joe and their two daughters lived in the third floor apartment.
We went everywhere together. Beaches amusement parks museums food markets with tons of Italian delicacies parks parades etc.
my grandfather was a hero of sorts for many Italians because of helping people who were being abused or bullied. He was visited by so many people who loved him that as a child I was constantly meeting Italians who forever thanked him remembered how he helped them. I understood Italian fluently because I practically lived with my grandparents
We eventually moved to the suburbs and when they passed away I literally couldn’t go to their funerals. I just couldn’t say goodbye. When my parents died I had to bury them with all the courage I could. And when you mentioned the gift of older people I can attest to the fact that it’s even more important than that. I am in fact who I am because of their examples the way they lived their lives , their love their knowledge, and their courage. I am married for 32 years our son just got married last month in our back yard.
We are living the American dream thanks to my grandparents leaving Sicily in the early 1900s.
I taught special ed in public schools for decades and brought my Italian family culture to life for many children who could never know that kind of bond but they felt my love for them and that was all good.
So thank you for your memories because my memories were sweet too.
Btw I still visit all their graves and light candles for them on the anniversary of their deaths.
Someday we will all meet again and that love will be there heaven and that day will also be just grand.

I echo the sentiment as a millennial being partly raised by my grandparents who were members of the greatest generation (yes, if you have 2 generations who have kids later in life,a millennial can have grandparents all born before 1920). I was fortunate enough to have three out the four make it into their nineties. Members of that generation know these government parlor tricks... I really believe part of the motive to isolate those in care centers during covid was to silence their knowledge. The few I know now are over 100... And have said that the present day is far more scary than 1930s Germany, etc. as far as propaganda and the media go.

I notice that whenever our culture has tried to fight ageism, they use TV shows or movies depicting the elderly as reckless and promiscuous to show that old age is not that bad. (Golden Girls. Grumpy Old Men.) "See. Seniors are great. They're just like stupid, horny teenagers but with wrinkles."

I echo the sentiment as a millennial being partly raised by my grandparents who were members of the greatest generation (yes, if you have 2 generations who have kids later in life,a millennial can have grandparents all born before 1920). I was fortunate enough to have three out the four make it into their nineties. Members of that generation know these government parlor tricks... I really believe part of the motive to isolate those in care centers during covid was to silence their knowledge. The few I know now are over 100... And have said that the present day is far more scary than 1930s Germany, etc. as far as propaganda and the media go.

My mom passed away at age 96 in 2016. Both of my parents lived in the Netherlands during WW2. My mom had scarlet fever at age 19. She survived.
My point is, my mother would have NEVER bought into the covid hoax. She would have never worn a mask or isolated. I am a lot like her....

The strengths of the elderly are patience, wisdom, and memories.
I notice that whenever our culture has tried to fight ageism, they use TV shows or movies depicting the elderly as reckless and promiscuous to show that old age is not that bad. (Golden Girls. Grumpy Old Men.) "See. Seniors are great. They're just like stupid, horny teenagers but with wrinkles."
I guess that's easier than Hollywood trying to depict wisdom or patience in a positive light.
